Ruidoso is a small ski town at the base of the Sierra Blanca Mountain range in the Lincoln National Forest home of the Apache Ski Resort. It reminded me of north shore Tahoe in the 70’s. Some of the shops were art galleries, but most were women’s boutiques with multiple racks of very large size clothing.

The local claim to fame for this area is that there was a huge forest fire and a bear cub was hanging onto a tree top. Someone rescued the cub and named him Smokey. He became the poster child for fire prevention.
